Wizz Air’s new Abu Dhabi division has received its first aircraft, an Airbus A321neo registered in the United Arab Emirates.

The aircraft (A6-WZB), fitted with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines, was originally ordered by Wizz Air but underwent a sale-and-leaseback through Singapore’s BOC Aviation.

It carries a livery similar to that of the European Wizz Air operation but featuring distinguishing ‘Abu Dhabi’ lettering on the vertical fin.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has been formed through a joint venture with diverse holding company ADQ.

It has disclosed an initial route network covering Mediterranean and Caucasian destinations, including Athens, Larnaca, Alexandria, Odessa, Yerevan and Kutaisi.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi managing director Kees Van Schaick says the arrival of the twinjet is an “important step” towards “developing our presence” in the UAE capital city.

The airline joins Middle Eastern budget operator Air Arabia in setting up a dedicated Abu Dhabi division.

Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, which has been formed in co-operation with Etihad Airways, commenced operations in July and serves routes including Alexandria, Sohag, Kabul and Dhaka.
